Scotland Resource Map

In acknowledgement of the scale and speed of climate change and the likely effects on Scotland’s economy, society and environment, 42 of Scotland’s universities and colleges have signed the Universities & Colleges Climate Commitment for Scotland (UCCCfS), a framework for institutions to address the challenges of climate change.

Signatories are committed to publishing a 5-year Climate Change Action Plan by February 2010. These plans will include measurable targets and timescales to achieve significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from all business operations and activities, including:

• energy consumption and source;
• waste reduction, recycling and responsible disposal;
• sustainable estate development;
• sustainable travel planning; and
• responsible procurement of goods and services.

In support of the UCCCfS, EAUC-Scotland has undertaken a major resource mapping exercise to facilitate partnership between the sectors and the organisations that promote sustainable development and provide the necessary support to develop and deliver Climate Change Action Plans. Comprehensive details of 46 organisations' services and support have been collated and are found in this document.

The information is organised in a framework that addresses the three recognised phases of estates development and management:

1. Pre Construction;
2. Construction; and
3. Post Construction.

In addition to these three phases, the information has been broken down into two other groupings:

1. Organisational areas of assistance; and
2. Sustainability Themes.

Organisational areas of assistance have been grouped into five categories and contain information on the following:

1. Funding;
2. Toolkits;
3. Workshops / Training;
4. Resource Information; and
5. Case Studies.

16 key Sustainability Themes have been selected:

1. Biodiversity
2. Carbon Emission Reduction
3. Community
4. Corporate Social Responsibility
5. Education
6. Environmental Management Systems
7. Energy Source, Consumption and Efficiency
8. Health
9. Information and Communication Technology
10. Pollution and Toxicity
11. Procurement and Trade
12. Sustainable Design, Construction and Building Materials
13. Sustainable Development
14. Transportation and travel Planning
15. Water Management
16. Waste Management and Recycling.

The Resource Map is an interactive “live” document that will be updated on a quarterly basis to reflect ongoing developments in sustainability and associated funding streams and resources.

The key aim of the Resource Map is that it be a useful and user friendly tool. Therefore to ensure we deliver a tool that FHE practitioners can use effectively, we would appreciate feedback from colleagues and end-users on the Resource Map’s:

1. Usability;
2. Usefulness;
3. Layout;
4. Content;
5. Additional themes to be included;
6. Additional organisations to be included; and
7. Additional support to be included.
