DECC invites universities to heat pump roadshows

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) is providing a series of free one-day training courses, designed to help university energy managers to understand more about how heat pumps can deliver lower energy bills, greater comfort and better learning environments.

The roadshows will offer participants the chance to learn more about why heat pumps make sense, build their technical knowledge of how best to ensure good performance and understand the financing of heat pumps.

Roadshows for the non-domestic sector will be held on:
• Tuesday 16 June – London (fully booked)
• Tuesday 23 June – Glasgow
• Wednesday 24 June – Newcastle
• Wednesday 1 July – Exeter
• Thursday 2 July – Cardiff
• Monday 6 July – Birmingham
• Tuesday 7 July – Manchester

Heat pumps are already being used in the higher education sector, but there is potential for further deployment of ground, air and water source heat pump systems. Durham University’s new Palatine Centre uses air source heat pumps to provide heating and cooling to a student services facility, Law School and Library extension. The Open University is using ground source heat pumps to serve a BREEAM Outstanding building on its Walton Road Campus. Researchers from Glasgow Caledonian University are also playing an important part in investigating the feasibility of using water in Glasgow Subway tunnels as a heat source, demonstrating the importance of the higher education sector in driving innovation.

The roadshows are designed for potential heat pump customers – such as universities, colleges, business owners, property developers and housing providers. Priority will be given to potential customers for heat pumps, rather than installers or consultants, when allocating places at each session.
