HE is undertaking thousands of refurbishments a year but their small individual scale, often specialised nature, and limited time windows for work can make it difficult to achieve optimum design for operational effectiveness and efficiency, and minimised environmental impact.

The morning session of this event will describe an existing (RICS Ska Rating) scheme which some universities are using to deal with the environmental aspects of refurbishment and refit in catering, office, learning and other spaces. AUDE is hoping to fund work to raise awareness of the scheme’s value, and to better adapt it to HE circumstances.

The afternoon session will take the first step in the development of a set of design guidance principals, assessment criteria and cases to assist with refurbishment of laboratories. This will build on the successful experience of the S-Lab Environmental Assessment Framework for laboratory operation (incorporated into the NUS Green Impact programme). It is hoped that the environmental aspects of the design criteria can form the basis of new measures within the RICS Ska Rating scheme.

There will also be tours (one for early arrivers, and several during the lunch break) of the recently refurbished Joseph Priestley Chemistry Teaching Laboratory. This has been shortlisted for the S-Lab Environmental category for its 30% reduction in energy use, with under three years payback, compared to its previous form. This has been achieved by retrofitting VAV fume cupboards; variable air supply; installing ventilated chemical storage to enable easy fume cupboard switch off; encouraging sash closure through alarms when left open and awareness campaigns.

See the S-Lab section of www.goodcampus.org for more details of the Environmental Assessment Framework as well as cases, guidance, videos, presentations and other outputs on good laboratory practice.
