Position Summary
University College Cork is an international leader in sustainability in higher education, as the world’s first Green Flag campus and the only university outside of North America to be awarded a STARS Gold rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. The Centre for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning is responsible for ensuring that all staff and students involved in teaching and assessment activities at UCC are provided with opportunities to gain the relevant qualifications and CPD supports to enable them to fulfil their role. CIRTL is also recognized internationally as a leader in research-informed teaching and learning.

Funded under the National Forum’s Strategic Alignment of Teaching & Learning Enhancement grant scheme of Ireland’s National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning, the full-time 3-year Education for Sustainable Development Officer will be crucial in driving our commitments in this broad area.
 
We are seeking an enthusiastic Education for Sustainable Development Officer to work with staff in UCC to ensure that the SDGs, sustainability, and related environmental, social and economic issues are addressed across UCC’s degree programmes at undergraduate and taught postgraduate level, in support of UCC’s Strategic Plan “Securing our Future” (2023-2028).

This will also involve ensuring staff, which includes academic, research and professional services, are provided with professional development in these topics as well as in the use of appropriate and innovative teaching and learning approaches. This three year position builds on existing initiatives such as UCC’s SDG Toolkit and short course on learning and teaching with the SDGs.

Education for Sustainable Development empowers learners “with knowledge, skills, values, and attributes to take informed decisions and make responsible actions for environmental integrity, economic viability, and a just society” (ESD to 2030: Second National Strategy on Education for Sustainable Development, pg. 6)
 
The Education for Sustainable Development Officer will develop and implement a series of initiatives with staff and students to embed education for sustainable development across the curriculum in UCC.
 
The project will involve:
The development, coordination and evaluation of ESD initiatives with staff and students
The collation and sharing of good practice examples and case studies to show different disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches to ESD.
An enquiry through-line to advance scholarship relating to ESD and provide evidence of the integration of ESD in the curriculum.
