Green Gown Awards

Activity Background

Established in 2004, the Green Gown Awards recognise the exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by universities and colleges. With sustainability moving up the agenda, the Awards have become established as the most prestigious recognition of best practice within the further and higher education sector.

The Green Gown Awards are administered by the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) and each region are governed by a local cross agency steering group. The judging panel are representatives of sector organisations relevant to each region.

The Awards grow every year and have an increasing international presence - following the huge success of the UK and Ireland Awards, the Australasian Green Gown Awards were established in 2010 and the French speaking Green Gown Awards - Les trophées des campus responsables - were established in 2014. 2016 sees the introduction of the 6 United Nations Environment Programme regions (Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, North America and West Asia) known collectively as the GUPES Green Gown Awards.
