Decarbonisation: Tools, resources and information

The sustainability agenda is increasingly recognised by institutions within the post-16 sector, given rising material and energy costs, greater regulatory focus on value for money, and the growing public intolerance of wasteful, environmentally harmful behaviours by public institutions. Universities and colleges are responding, now more than ever, to demands to decarbonise their estates, operations, supply chains and more and to become net-zero.

To support your team's response, below you will find the most recent, useful and practical resources that EAUC have developed for universities and colleges, many of which include tailored offerings:

Standardised Carbon Emissions Framework (SCEF)
Developed by EAUC, in consultation with the sector and various sector bodies, SCEF is a standardised framework for universities and colleges on how they should be reporting their carbon emissions.  The SCEF includes a plain English interpretation of the GHG Protocol and how this applies to the further and higher education sectors as well as providing guidance and good practice on how to calculate emissions.

Cost of Net-Zero Calculator and Guide
The Cost of Net Zero Calculator and Guide aims to give a standard means of answering the crucial question of how much is it going to cost to achieve net-zero, and in doing so unlock investment funding for the many actions that are needed. This is urgent if the sector is to play its part in the national and international effort to halt climate change. This has been developed in partnership between AUDE, BUFDG and EAUC.

Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) Tool
Following on the Education & Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) recommendation that colleges in England should submit their carbon reporting through the Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR), the SECR tool developed in partnership with Hillside Environmental Services, is a quick and simple tool to meet the reporting requirements which all the conversion factors built in so you just need to enter your raw data and the tool does the hard work for you!

Carbon Coalition - offsetting for the education sector
The Carbon Coalition is an initiative for universities and colleges to purchase carbon credits for offsetting residual carbon emissions which can not be further reduced or as part of a net-zero plan to achieve a more ambitious target year. The Carbon Coalition provides a credible route to high quality offsetting projects which also meets institution's procurement rules.
