Our Nature, Your Future

Winner, Nature Positive Finalist, International

About

Our Nature, Your Future’ encompasses the ethos of all those at Plumpton College where sustainability and the environment is a strategic golden thread of the organisation, underpinning those decisions made every day.
Plumpton is proud to promote a ‘Nature First’ attitude, allowing all spaces of the
campus to be made available to wildlife. Understanding how all species are
intertwined, the campus is managed to be one ecosystem, one living classroom, a place for people to live and learn where all species of life benefit. Examples can be seen all over campus from the minute you enter to the minute you leave - House Martin’s nesting in eaves of buildings, green roofs, meadow grass, standing deadwood, and a wilder churchyard. Students across all departments are engaged in local, national and international environmental projects supporting all types of species, not just as an educational tool, but to develop themselves personally and in society, promoting initiatives which can be scaled up or down in any location

Top 3 learnings

  1. Less physical intervention doesn't mean practical tasks are completed quicker, it means more considered work.
  2. Deeper learning for learners to appreciate the intricacies of relationships where humans and nature meet.
  3. Communication where conservation projects taking place as to why an area appears as it does.

What is means to win

It would mean so much to all those that contributed to be recognised for their hard work and raise the profile still further of the importance of protecting nature, further inspiring others to join the movement. Where there is anxiety amongst the population over the size of the task to turn around the nature crisis, not thinking that they can make a difference, we hope the work carried on the campus can show that lots of smaller actions really do contribute to make a larger action and effect. Success would only drive the College to want to deliver further and look at what are the next steps to improve nature. We hope the kudos of winning the award will attract others to want to collaborate with the College on further nature enhancing projects.
