About
The Campus Carbon Lite Initiative at SRM Trichy Arts & Science College is a student-driven climate campaign focused on lowering the campus’s carbon emissions through easily scalable actions related to UN SDG 13. Initiated in June 2025, the initiative centres around tree plantation, energy conservation, waste segregation, and low-carbon lifestyles.
Major activities in the initiative include tree plantation drives, “Switch Off” campaigns, going plastic-free in the campus, and “No Vehicle Day,” all carried out through internal funding from the institution. The initiative also engages students, faculty members, and support staff in its activities.
The initiative has been quite successful, with over 500 trees planted, electricity usage reduced by 10-12%, single-use plastic reduced by 70%, and waste segregation effectiveness at 80%. Additionally, there were over 900 participants in the initiative.
In general, it presents an economically viable and scalable model of institutional climate change initiatives.
