Sustainable Labs Competition and Sustainabli Project Pilot

About

The project consisted of two parts – (i) the Sustainable Labs Competition initiative run by the student-led Cambridge Zero Postgraduate Academy (CZPA) and funded jointly by Cambridge Zero and the Environmental Sustainability Team and (ii) staff and students collaborating to conduct the pilot initiative of the winning competition entry.

1. The Sustainable Labs Competition invited laboratory members (staff and students) across the University to come up with initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of their own laboratory work, and the competition stages were judged by a panel of academic and non-academic staff, facilitated by the CZPA members.
2. Following the competition, the prize money was awarded to a project called ‘Sustainabli’ to reduce energy-use of laboratory fume hoods through monitoring and engagement, and the student winner was mentored by members of the Environmental Sustainability Team and Cambridge Zero to lead on implementing at a pilot-scale in the University, with significant findings.

1. Planning for projects is invaluable, but action is the only way to get results.
2. Engagement in ‘shutting the sash’ in the pilot labs was already surprisingly high pre-competition.
3. Staff and students across our University are excited to reduce the environmental impact of research.

What would it mean to win? 

Winning a Green Gown Award (GGA) offers a powerful form of recognition for the sustained effort required to drive sustainability within a large and complex institution. Progress in this area often involves long-term commitment, with outcomes that are not always immediately visible. The recognition that a Green Gown Award brings would be an excellent way to recognise the contribution of those in the University community who have gone above and beyond in ensuring that carbon reduction and environmental improvement is embedded across University operations. The award also highlights the importance of collective action. Achieving meaningful progress in sustainability depends on the contributions of individuals, teams, and departments across the University. A Green Gown Award recognises this shared endeavour, reinforcing the idea that everyone, including students, have a role to play and that each contribution matters. This recognition can strengthen engagement and motivate continued collaboration, fostering a stronger culture of sustainability throughout the institution. Another key benefit is the recognition of an evidence-based approach. By drawing on internal academic expertise, institutions can ensure their sustainability initiatives are informed, credible, and impactful. Winning a GGA signals that this approach is not only rigorous but also effective, enhancing the institution’s reputation as a leader in sustainability practice and thought. Finally, receiving a Green Gown Award celebrates the dedication and achievements of students and staff alike. It shines a spotlight on the collective contributions that underpin sustainability success, boosting morale and providing a sense of pride across the university community.
