In February 2025, Belfast Metropolitan College launched its 2030 Sustainability & Climate Action Framework which delivers a whole-institution, measurable approach to climate action, embedding sustainability across the college. Underpinned by the SDG’s and the new NI Climate Reporting duties (2024) statutory climate reporting and clear 2030 targets—including 50% reduction in Scope 1 & 2 emissions and 30% energy reduction targets—the College has transitioned from compliance-led activity to an integrated, performance-driven model. College wide initiatives span low-carbon estate investment, renewable energy generation, sustainable procurement, green skills development and biodiversity enhancement, alongside strong governance and ISO-accredited management systems. Staff, learners and external partners are actively engaged through curriculum innovation and community projects, including nature-based solutions that enhance resilience and wellbeing. This holistic, scalable framework demonstrates how a further education college can lead system-wide change—delivering measurable carbon reductions, developing skills for a low-carbon economy, and embedding sustainability at the core of institutional decision-making.
