Sustainability Week at the University of Liverpool

Finalist, Student engagement Finalist, Student Engagement

About

Delivered with the Liverpool Guild of Students, academic and professional services teams, student societies and external partners, the week combined top-down institutional leadership with bottom-up student participation across fairs, workshops, tours, challenges and creative activities. Its flagship Sustainability Fair brought together over 30 interactive stalls and 378 attendees, connecting students and staff with research centres, operational teams, community organisations and local campaign groups. Student engagement was further strengthened through Guild-led activities, Living Lab projects and Pitch for the Planet, where students developed behaviour-change campaigns with industry professionals. The campaign achieved record reach, including 105.5k Instagram views, 17,580 accounts reached and 8,203 LinkedIn impressions. Sustainability Week has created a replicable engagement model that builds sustainability understanding, employability skills and practical action across the University community.

Top 3 learnings

  1. Our students engage most deeply when trusted with the space, confidence and platform to lead.
  2. Student engagement is strongest when our campus participation connects to real-world sustainability solutions.
  3. Staff–student partnership is most meaningful to us when expertise and lived experience shape action together.

What would it mean to win?

Although the University of Liverpool was relatively late to embed sustainability at scale, the establishment of a dedicated sustainability team in 2022 has accelerated transformative change across the institution. In just four years, we have integrated sustainability into institutional strategy, governance, and decision-making, delivering measurable impacts through our ambitious Sustainability Strategy and supporting plans. A Green Gown Award would recognise this rapid progress, strengthen the profile of sustainability across the University, and enable us to share our learning and drive wider sector-wide change.
