Species Identification Bootcamp

Finalist, Tomorrow's Employees

About

The Species Identification Bootcamp at Bishop Burton College is an innovative green skills programme designed to address regional biodiversity and sustainability challenges. Delivered between January and March, the initiative brought together 22 participants from local authorities, environmental consultancies, and community groups, fostering cross-sector collaboration. Through over 130 hours of blended learning, including classroom sessions and fieldwork at key ecological sites, participants developed technical skills in species identification, habitat assessment, and biodiversity monitoring. Developed in conjunction with the RSPB, Yorkshire Water and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, the course ensured strong industry relevance. The programme supports both upskilling and career transition, with participants applying their knowledge to real-world environmental management and community projects. A lasting outcome is the creation of a self-sustaining regional network, promoting ongoing collaboration and knowledge sharing. The Bootcamp demonstrates a scalable, cost-effective model for developing a skilled workforce capable of supporting nature recovery and a sustainable future.

Top 3 learnings

  1. We learned diverse participants created stronger peer learning and knowledge sharing.
  2. We found practical fieldwork significantly increased learner confidence and engagement.
  3. We learned collaboration between organisations built lasting environmental networks beyond the programme.

What it would mean to win

Winning a Green Gown Award for this project would be a brilliant way of recognising the work by all parties that went into developing the course and the outcomes of the students.
