About
SorGum is a student-led initiative from Universidad Tecmilenio that transforms agricultural waste into a sustainable packaging solution. In Tamaulipas, Mexico, approximately 1 million tons of sorghum are wasted annually due to low market demand. To address this, we developed a 100% biodegradable bioplastic bubble wrap that replaces traditional single-use plastics. Our project creates a fair market for nearly 30,000 local producers while achieving a 70% reduction in CO_2 emissions compared to conventional packaging. By integrating circular economy principles, SorGum not only mitigates plastic pollution—which reaches 7 million tons annually in Mexico—but also strengthens the agricultural value chain. Through cross-disciplinary collaboration and strategic industrial partnerships, we are driving the transition toward responsible consumption and production, proving that academic innovation can solve urgent environmental and social global challenges.
