About
SKITWALL (Skills in TVET Without Walls) is a digital-first vocational training initiative implemented by Nakuru Training Institute (NTI), funded by AUDA-NEPAD through the Skills Initiative for Africa, with support from KFW and the African Union. The programme delivers job-specific micro-skills to youth and women not in employment, education, or training (NEET) in Nakuru County, Kenya, through a Learning Management System (soma.skitwall.ac.ke). Learning is done through a fully-fledged Learning Management System - assignments, assessments, and portfolios are done digitally. All enrolled students complete two compulsory courses: Greening TVET & Communities, which embeds sustainability across all disciplines, and Employability Skills, which culminates in a digital portfolio of evidence. SKITWALL also includes Solar Installation training, supports NTI's on-campus solar infrastructure, and has established a tree and herbal garden of over 100 trees, embedding sustainability into both curriculum and campus life.
Top 3 learnings
1. We learned that removing physical barriers through digital delivery unlocks access for youth who were previously unable to participate in skills training.
2. Embedding sustainability as a compulsory course, not an optional module, ensures that every graduate leaves with green awareness, regardless of their vocational field.
3. We found that students who plant and nurture trees on campus develop a deep, lasting connection to environmental stewardship.
