Serving as a catalyst for sustainability in African higher education

Finalist, Sustainability Institution of the Year

About

The International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering (2iE) is a higher education institution committed to sustainable development. For more than 15 years, sustainability has been integrated into all of its activities. This ambition is enshrined in its Strategic Orientation Plan (2025–2029), which aims to position 2iE as an international leader in sustainable development. Its cross-cutting approach encompasses education, research, entrepreneurship, and environmental stewardship, including waste management, wastewater management, and monitoring of carbon emissions and resource consumption. More than 13,000 engineers have been trained, with over 30% of the curriculum focused on sustainability. This approach yields measurable results and has earned international recognition, such as the UI GreenMetric ranking (15th, 8th, and 5th in Africa between 2023 and 2025), the THE SDG Impact ranking (1st university in Francophone Sub-Saharan Africa), the EcoVadis CSR rating (score of 52/100, “committed organization”), and the Best CSR Organization Award in Dubai in 2022.
