Sasha Beswick

Finalist, Sustainability Champion - Staff Finalist

About

Since 2022, I’ve had the privilege of shaping sustainability at Barnsley College into something people feel part of, not something done to them. Starting from strong foundations, I’ve worked to grow a shared culture where sustainability is embedded in how we teach, lead and support our community. My approach has focused on empowering our college community to see themselves as agents of change. Through Carbon Literacy, SDG Ready and regional collaboration, sustainability has become more visible, relevant and connected to real opportunities. What began as individual initiatives has grown into a confident, whole-college movement rooted in people, place and purpose.

Top 3 learnings

  1. I’ve learned students become powerful change-makers when genuinely trusted as partners.
  2. I’ve learned change succeeds when you meet people where they are.
  3. I’ve realised true sustainability impact comes from culture, not just metrics.

What it means to win

Winning would recognise the cultural change Sasha Beswick has led across Barnsley College. It would celebrate not just individual achievement, but the way Sasha has helped staff and students see sustainability as something practical, positive and relevant to their own roles.
