Project Solar: Sustainable Returns for a Sustainable Future

Finalist, Money for Good

About

Birmingham Newman have been investing in solar power for many years, growing substantially each year. Even though we are a smaller university, sustainability is prominent in our university’s strategy. We want to invest in our green campus to improve the student experience and overall environment. This project proves that even small institutions with limited resources and budgets can create a large impact. Filtered down in our environmental policy and energy policy we have set ourselves the target to add 30kW of solar onto our campus each year, which we are continuing to achieve

Top 3 learnings

  1. I learnt that many different roof environments are suitable for solar install. And it can be practical to install on roofs that you may think are problematic. I now have invested interest with staying up to date with the solar power and equipment.
  2. Previously we used harnesses as roof fall safe systems. However, we learnt since the installation of solar equipment on our roof, that edge protection offers a much easier and safer working environment for maintenance/cleaning.
  3. I found that this project has enhanced our reputation, and approval rating amongst students and other university institutions. I have found that many of our students, who are a wide range of ages from 18-mature, are actively engaging with me on solar power workshops.

What it means to win

If we won a Green Gown Award it would mean so much to everyone at Birmingham Newman. But more importantly to the small team of people at Birmingham Newman, who are driving sustainability and the work they do is nothing short of incredible. It would be a fantastic way to say thank you but also show every other smaller HE institution their work is just as important, and crucial in protecting the natural environment.
