Net Zero Carbon by 2030

Finalist, 2030 Climate Action

About

UEL are on a journey to be Net Zero Carbon by 2030, by tackling climate change through our Vision 2028 strategy. That strategy has a sustainable objective, structured around four pillars: Sustainable Place, People, Policy, and Practice - each pillar guiding and governing our actions; operations, teaching and research, and civic engagement. We’re already generating energy on site from solar PV, EV and biomass and improving waste management. Since 2024 we’ve reduced waste generated, separated food waste and reduced it through programmes like FareShare and Too Good To Go. The university enhanced biodiversity through tree planting, gardening, rewilding, and enhancing green spaces on campus, while also building and refurbishing sustainably. The sustainability team actively support teaching and research, by delivering lectures, co-writing applications for funding, developing green skills and creating living lab environments. Community engagement, delivering on social value and civic responsibility is also key.

  1. Cooperation is crucial, engagement is key.
