Impact Through Innovation: Eliminating Single Use Packaging

Finalist, Creating Impact

About

The introduction of the Vytal reusable packaging scheme at Askham Bryan College represents a significant step forward in reducing single use packaging and promoting sustainable behaviours across the campus. This initiative has been implemented in response to the limitations and challenges experienced in previous reusable system trials, while aligning with the College’s broader environmental commitments. The Vytal system introduces a digital, app based reusable packaging solution, removing many of the barriers associated with previous approaches. Students and staff can borrow reusable containers at catering outlets and return them within a set period, with usage tracked via a simple scanning process. This ease of use has been key to its early success.

Top 3 learnings

  1. I learned simplicity and convenience are critical to driving rapid, lasting behaviour change.
  2. I found reuse models outperform traditional deposit or manual reusable systems.
  3. I saw strong impact can be achieved quickly with minimal resources and effective partnerships.

What it means to win

Winning a Green Gown Award for the Vytal initiative would be a powerful recognition of our institution’s commitment to driving meaningful, measurable change in sustainability—both environmentally and culturally.
