FEMET: Full Electric Multi-Purpose Equipment Transporter for the Aircraft Maintenance Technology Program

Finalist, 2030 Climate Action

About

The Full Electric Multi-Purpose Equipment Transporter (FEMET) is a landmark sustainable logistics project at WCC Aeronautical and Technological College. By replacing carbon-intensive airport ground support vehicles with a student-engineered, solar-assisted electric powertrain, FEMET directly tackles aviation’s hidden emissions. The project successfully bridges technical education with climate action, providing a zero-emission transporter for the Aircraft Maintenance Technology (AMT) department. This initiative significantly reduces the college’s carbon footprint, eliminates noise pollution, and serves as a living laboratory for renewable energy integration in aviation. Aligned with SDGs 7, 9, and 13, FEMET proves that tertiary institutions can lead the green transition through innovative, localized engineering solutions. Its success has catalyzed institutional change, embedding sustainability into the core curriculum and operational culture, while showcasing a scalable model for the global aviation industry.

Top 3 learnings

  1. We learned that integrating solar-electric powertrains achieves total energy independence for sustainable campus logistics.
  2. We discovered that hardware-software synchronization is critical for maintaining reliable real-time diagnostic monitoring.
  3. FEMET proves that purposeful digital and renewable integration delivers high-performance industrial solutions at lower costs.
