Decarbonizing UM6P's Experimental Farm

Finalist, 2030 Climate Action

About

The Agricultural Innovation and Technology Transfer Center (AITTC) serves as UM6P’s open-air agricultural laboratory. Beyond its role in agricultural experimentation, the AITTC has become a living climate action platform, integrating renewable energy production, carbon accounting, circular economy principles, low-carbon agricultural practices and technology transfer.

In 2024, a comprehensive carbon assessment was conducted, positioning the experimental farm as a measurable and accountable climate action project aligned with the GHG Protocol (Scopes 1, 2 and 3) with a total emission of 744 tCO₂e.

This data-driven approach allows the university not only to measure impact but to actively reduce and compensate emissions through structural transformation.

Top 3 learnings

  1. We learned agrivoltaics can enhance both energy production and crop resilience.
  2. We discovered carbon accounting drives smarter, data-based decision-making.
  3. We realized visible climate action accelerates institutional culture change.
