CRUK CI Journey to Net Zero

Finalist, 2030 Climate Action

About

Our pathway to net zero is driven by a commitment to measurable, sustained carbon reduction, supported by our ISO 50001 Energy Management System (EnMS) and the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF). We seek recognition for achieving and maintaining these accreditations, delivering impactful environmental projects, and sustaining progress toward our net zero target. Key capital investments include our LED lighting upgrades, degasification through new equipment, new high-performance chillers, and BMS sensor calibration improvements. These initiatives, alongside ongoing efficiency measures, have delivered significant results, with a reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions between 2019 and 2025, and behavioural change in staff and students. Our continued focus ensures long-term environmental improvement and operational efficiency, with a collaborative approach.

Top 3 learnings

  1. We have learnt to prioritise environmental impacts into our decision making.
  2. Our Researchers are willing to adapt their work to help reduce our environmental impact.
  3. We have learnt how to efficiently manage our energy consumption and reporting.

What it would mean to win

We are immensely proud of the world-leading research carried out within our Institute, and equally proud of our commitment to reducing environmental impact without compromising the science. Winning this award would be a significant achievement, recognising the dedication and collective effort our teams invest every day beyond their core roles to drive meaningful climate action.
