Wonky Bowl is a student led community group tackling food insecurity across Southampton and Winchester through a circular approach to surplus food redistribution, community meal provision and education. Since 2024 the project has delivered over 2900 meals to those facing hardship while diverting surplus food from waste streams. We work alongside local charities and organisations and food suppliers to provide nutritious meals while reducing environmental impact. Beyond meal distribution the project supports people experiencing hidden homelessness through practical cooking workshops to build confidence, independence and life skills. The initiative has also expanded to 2 new locations in Winchester and continues to grow through partnerships with organisations. By combining social impact, sustainability and student leadership, Wonky Bowl demonstrates how higher education institutions can create meaningful community change while contributing to a more sustainable food system.
Winning a Green Gown Award would provide valuable recognition for both Wonky Bowl and the University of Southampton. It would help raise awareness of the growing challenges of food insecurity, food waste and hidden homelessness within our local communities, while showcasing the positive impact that student-led initiatives can have in addressing these issues. The increased visibility would help us engage new partners, volunteers and supporters, enabling us to expand our reach and support more people across Hampshire. It would also demonstrate the University's commitment to sustainability, community engagement and creating meaningful social impact beyond the campus.
