2iE’s Carbon Neutrality Strategy by 2030

Finalist, 2030 Climate Action

About

The International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering (2iE) has committed to a structured climate transition strategy aimed at achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. Since 2009, the institute has conducted an annual carbon assessment to manage its greenhouse gas emissions. This approach has enabled the development of a carbon neutrality plan incorporating mitigation actions across Scopes 1, 2, and, progressively, Scope 3. Concrete measures are being implemented, including energy efficiency, the integration of renewable energy, and resource optimization. Monitoring is based on performance indicators and an internal reporting tool (CIC). At the same time, 2iE is strengthening climate adaptation, research, and innovation in key areas. The institute actively engages its stakeholders, particularly students. Finally, it leverages its experiences to disseminate best practices across African institutions.

Top 3 learnings

  1. The success of the project depends first and foremost on the commitment of senior leaders, which will enable climate actions to be integrated into the institution’s operations.
  2. Calculating it’s annual carbon footprint allows the institute to identify the main sources of emissions and better address them in order to help reduce its emissions.
  3. Raising awareness about climate change has enabled students and staff to better understand the issues related to climate change and to take action.
