The Irish Government’s consultation on the next update to the Climate Action Plan seeks views on the policies and measures needed to close Ireland’s emissions gap, accelerate delivery across key sectors, address barriers to climate action, support a Just Transition and strengthen climate adaptation.
In our response, EAUC highlights the role of post-16 education as both a sector requiring decarbonisation and a key enabler of climate action across the wider economy. We welcome progress on tertiary estate decarbonisation and Green Skills 2030, while emphasising the need to embed sustainability across mainstream education and training, rather than focusing solely on specialist green occupations. We also highlight the importance of institutional capacity, long-term funding and stronger alignment between climate, education, skills and economic policy.
We call for greater recognition of education and skills as essential infrastructure for delivering Ireland’s climate targets, alongside stronger support for resilient and low-carbon tertiary estates, place-based partnerships and research and innovation. Our response also emphasises the need to implement existing adaptation frameworks, ensure education institutions are supported to manage climate risks, and embed Just Transition principles through accessible lifelong learning, skills development and inclusive opportunities.
