Make the most of Swansea

Coming to Swansea for our annual conference?

With its beautiful beaches, coastal walks, cycling routes and independent venues to explore, Swansea may be one of our most scenic, and fitting, locations for our summer sustainability conference.

We asked staff at Swansea University how you can make the most of your stay.

Here’s what they suggested.

1. Head to the beach

Did we mention that the Bay Campus is right on the beach?

It's so close you'll be able to take a stroll at break and lunch times.

You can also join us for our organised litter pick walk on the morning of Tuesday 23 June at 7.30am. This is good opportunity to meet other delegates in an informal, relaxed way before the main conference begins.

If you have time to fit in another beach trip before or after the event, the stunning Gower Peninsula isn't far away and home to some of the UK’s most beautiful beaches.

2. Explore Crymlyn Burrows nature reserve

Just beside Bay Campus is Crymlyn Burrows, a nature reserve of dunes, beach and saltmarsh that is recognised for its biodiversity and wildlife habitats.

The area is a protected Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

Staff at Swansea University say it’s the perfect place to stroll, reflect and reset:

“The dunes, saltmarsh and beach are valued by the University as a place for quiet recreation away from the stresses of academic life as well as being used as a living laboratory for teaching and research in a variety of fields. It is a key place for children from local schools to connect with nature and learn about their natural heritage.”

3. Make your way to Mumbles

A trip to Swansea wouldn’t be complete without visiting Mumbles.

The seaside village is known for its independent shops, cafés, Victorian pier and castle.

You can cycle there along the seafront in under 40 minutes using the Santander Cycles.

We recommend you download the Santander Cycles app for more information on bike pick up and drop off locations.

4. Explore the work of local photographers

Swansea University’s Singleton Campus has an on-site arts centre, Taliesin Arts Centre, which offers a programme of films, music and performances throughout the year.

During the conference, the centre will be hosting a Wildlife Photography Exhibition showcasing photographers from South Wales.

Access times vary. Entry is free.

5. Enjoy Joe’s ice cream

When the sun’s out, locals head to Joe's Ice Cream, a famous ice cream parlour that has been making ice cream for more than 100 years.

Many say a trip to Swansea isn't complete without a visit to Joe's!

Good news: we spotted vegan ice cream on the menu too.
