The Off-Grid Classroom

Finalist, Next Generation Learning and Skills

About

Glasgow Clyde College’s Off-Grid Renewable Energy Classroom represents a pioneering whole-college approach to sustainability that combines environmental leadership, curriculum innovation and industry-responsive skills development. Developed from a disused electronics lab at the College’s Cardonald Campus, the project transformed ageing infrastructure into Scotland’s first fully off-grid, net zero classroom powered by solar PV, wind generation and advanced battery storage technologies. The initiative demonstrates how sustainability can be embedded simultaneously across curriculum, campus operations, institutional culture and wider economic engagement.
