About

The Campus Amphibian Rescue Squad!

A new initiative was added to the existing campus wildlife activities to find and rescue toads and newts that were crossing a busy pathway on the University Campus during their spring migration. I spearheaded and managed the group and with the help of the estates staff and a network of Green Champions across the University, we recruited and trained a small but dedicated group staff and students who volunteered their precious time to support us.  We patrolled the pathways for 2 hours a night on 14 evenings over a 4-week period, saving 134 individuals this year.

Top 3 learnings

  1. I have learnt that being visible and approachable creates natural opportunities to engage others
  2. Working tirelessly, I can indeed deliver meaningful impact to wildlife beyond my formal role
  3. I can create inclusive, hands-on wildlife opportunities to connect people to science and nature

What it means to win

Winning a Green Gown Award would be a significant achievement for the University of Warwick and would help further embed sustainability across our institutional culture. It would recognise the dedication and impact of staff leading positive change, while inspiring more colleagues and students to become actively involved in sustainability initiatives across campus and within the wider community.  The award would also provide valuable external recognition of the University’s commitment to sustainability and climate action, helping to strengthen engagement, partnerships, and momentum for future projects. Most importantly, it would demonstrate that individual leadership can drive meaningful institutional change and encourage others to take action.  For the University, this recognition would be especially meaningful as an opportunity to celebrate and thank Tanya for her outstanding work, dedication, and the lasting impact she has made across the Warwick community.
