About
It is a creative, fun and rewarding way for our students to gain inspiration and recognition for building sustainability into their communities. The programme features a workbook of challenges that are completed throughout the academic year and connected to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The group with the most points will receive the title of ‘Greener Futures Club/Society of the Year’, presented at their respective awards ceremony. From a small project started in 2017 with 5 groups signed up, this project has seen massive growth with 35 groups participating in 2025/26 led by 41 elected Sustainability Officers across sports and societies committees.
Top 3 learnings
- I have learnt a lot about the importance of staff culture in the sustainability space, when you have a passionate and engaged sabbatical team in the sustainability space – anything is possible! It is important to put careful time and effort into nurturing this.
- We have learnt to develop specific tools that are useful – our conscious consumerism guide is a handy tool used by students to learn more about ethical purchasing and circular economy.
- We have also learnt the importance of collaboration! We are stronger together and co-creation with students is paramount to success!
What would it mean to win?
It would be a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the students involved in Greener Futures. Winning an award reinforces why we do what we do, and encourages new staff working in the sustainability area to keep going! Being award winning helps us a students' union be recognised and secure funding from our university.
