Driving a just transition for Barnsley

Finalist, Sustainability Institution of the Year

About

Barnsley College is driving a just transition for Barnsley, supporting the borough’s move from coal-mining heritage to a low-carbon, digitally enabled future. As an anchor institution, the College has embedded sustainability across its estate, curriculum, governance, employer partnerships and community engagement. Its independent Scope 1 and 2 Decarbonisation Strategy establishes a £9.5m pathway to reduce emissions by 92.3% by 2045, with a 49.8% reduction possible within five years. Major investments include the £18m heritage retrofit of the 93-year-old Barnsley College University Centre, achieving an outstanding EPC A rating, and the Clean Energy Training Centre, delivering practical green-skills training.

Top 3 learnings

  1. We learned that sustainability must be practical, visible and relevant to every learner.
  2. We learned that retrofit can protect heritage while accelerating low-carbon transition.
  3. We learned that culture change happens when staff and students shape solutions.

What it means to win

Winning a Green Gown Award would be recognition of Barnsley College’s role as an anchor institution supporting a just transition for Barnsley. It would validate the College’s whole-institution approach to sustainability – connecting estate decarbonisation, heritage regeneration, green skills, curriculum reform and community engagement.
