Barnsley College is driving a just transition for Barnsley, supporting the borough’s move from coal-mining heritage to a low-carbon, digitally enabled future. As an anchor institution, the College has embedded sustainability across its estate, curriculum, governance, employer partnerships and community engagement. Its independent Scope 1 and 2 Decarbonisation Strategy establishes a £9.5m pathway to reduce emissions by 92.3% by 2045, with a 49.8% reduction possible within five years. Major investments include the £18m heritage retrofit of the 93-year-old Barnsley College University Centre, achieving an outstanding EPC A rating, and the Clean Energy Training Centre, delivering practical green-skills training.
