Peat has been a mainstay in horticulture due to its exceptional properties but its extraction exacerbates climate change, destroys habitats and increases flood risk. Currently available peat-free growing media are not suitable for producing ‘pressed blocks’ that are widely used for the production of transplanted seedlings used in field |
Top three learnings
1. Close work with industrial/farming collaborators has enabled us to maximise relevance and impact.
2. We have developed new techniques to assess the quality and performance of peat-free growing
media.
3. Links with the organic growing community have been important to fully understand the research
requirements.

What it means to win
Winning a Green Gown Award would help us build on the momentum and enthusiasm to achieve our environmental targets by strengthening the positive engagement we have with students, staff and stakeholders in the wider community. It would also recognise the hard work that has already been done and facilitate the impact of new research and innovation.
