Daniel Whiteley

Finalist, Sustainability Champion - Student Finalist

About

I began my sustainability journey at Edge Hill University as a placement student and, since September 2025, have continued in the role of Corporate Sustainability Intern. During this time, I have supported the C‑CAT (Carbon Calculation and Analysis Toolkit) project by helping to develop a carbon calculator for field trip emissions, establishing a baseline that enables the University to track and reduce its environmental impact - an approach that can be adopted more widely across the sector. I have also contributed to behaviour change campaigns, helping to engage staff and students in more sustainable practices. Through analysis of survey data, I have supported evidence-based decision making around Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), and undertaken cost–benefit analysis to embed sustainability into procurement decisions. My work has strengthened data-driven approaches at EHU while generating tools and insights that can inform best practice across Higher Education.

Top 3 learnings

  1. Iterative development is essential: Testing approaches ensures the most effective, practical solution is adopted.
  2. Persistence in data collection: Follow up consistently to secure complete datasets for meaningful, credible analysis.
  3. Learning from the sector: Review sector practices to ensure consistency, identify opportunities, and enable collaboration.
