Waste Minimisation Officer - The University of Winchester

EFS-E06 - Waste Minimisation Officer

The University of Winchester is looking for an enthusiastic and organised individual to join the Energy & Environment team on an 18 month fixed term basis to assist with the delivery of waste focused sustainability projects. These include the removal of Single Use Plastics from the Institution, boosting recycling and introducing waste food collections.
The role-holder will assist the Environment & Sustainability Manager in the implementation and delivery of the Eliminating Single Use Plastics Strategy. The role holder will have responsible for raising awareness of the University’s Strategy and encouraging engagement and monitoring compliance across Departments. This will include the delivery of student and staff engagement campaigns aimed at initiating and embedding plastic free sustainable behaviour across the University, including promotion of the University’s planned Plastic Free Shop. The role holder will also be responsible for running awareness programmes in partnership with external stakeholders, such as Surfers Against Sewage’s Plastic Free Communities and Plastic Free Winchester. You will also work closely with our student representatives.
The University is extending waste food collections to Halls of Residence. The role-holder will be responsible for day-to-day management of this programme, as well as overseeing a variety of other recycling initiatives across Campus.
As part of a busy team, the role-holder will be expected to support colleagues as required in the delivery of the University’s Environmental Management System, to promote Education for Sustainable Development and initiatives such as Go Green Week, to support colleagues in the provision of travel and transport advice, to produce data for internal and external reports and to work with a range of external partners organisations.
Developing imaginative initiatives and proficient use of social media are essential. The post holder will need to work closely with the University’s waste provider. Therefore, an understanding of the waste hierarchy and ability to analyse waste data will form an important part of the role, as would an interest in the circular economy. A high standard of proficiency in Excel and/or other data analysis packages would be a plus, as would proficiency in managing social media accounts.
As our ideal candidate you will be educated to degree level standard or equivalent in a sustainability related subject, be computer literate and have a thorough understanding of waste and sustainability issues.
The University particularly welcomes applications from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds for this post as they are under-represented in jobs at this level.  Please be assured that all applicants will be treated equally during the selection process.
One of our core values is ‘individuals matter’. As an employee at the University of Winchester, we are committed to your wellbeing and development. You will have access to a wide range of benefits and support including a comprehensive staff development programme, generous holiday entitlement and pension scheme. Further details can be found on our website.
