Sustainability Engagement Manager, University of Bristol, C/D 02/07/15

As Sustainability Engagement Manager you will work closely with the University of Bristol’s Sustainability department to lead on student communications and engagement with sustainable behaviours with the Halls of Residences but also the wider student community. The aim of the role is to encourage students (and relevant accommodation staff) to undertake sustainable behaviours and as such you will lead on Bristol Hub’s environment and sustainability programmes, taking responsibility for coordinating student leaders and delivering socially and environmentally impactful programmes and campaigns. You will be part of both the Bristol Hub staff team and the Sustainability team and will therefore also be involved in developing, implementing and adapting operational procedures to promote sustainable efficiencies in resource management at University residences. The successful candidate will have the energy and passion to drive student sustainability actions at Bristol University, be a natural motivator and community organiser.

In particular you will be responsible for (but may not be limited to) the following projects:
• Developing and implementing a communications plan for sustainability activities including waste, energy
and transports in the halls as well as wider student communications.
• Recruiting and supporting student volunteers and paid ‘interns’
• Planning and implementing a range of sustainability audits primarily in the halls and implementing
improvement as a result of audit outcomes.
• Developing and implementing ‘Skills for Sustainability’ a student training programme.

Job Description

Location: Based at Bristol University, with some travel to our Oxford HQ required (all expenses reimbursed).

Salary: £21-25,000 per annum, depending on experience

Start date: This is a fixed term contract from 1st August 2015 for 12 months.


1. Programme Delivery
Specifically you are responsible for the following:
- Developing and implementing a communications plan for sustainability activities including waste, energy and transport in the University halls, external residences, Langford, as well as wider student communications in line with the University’s Policy and Strategy for Sustainability
- Delivering marketing materials as required for delivery of the communications plan. This will involve development of posters, flyers, web site, social media and videos.
- Assist in the development and the delivery of waste reduction campaigns, which will include recycling and reuse events, water saving campaigns, energy saving campaigns and transport activities
- Arrange, plan and implement a range of sustainability audits, including basic waste and energy audits, to support the University’s Environmental Management System (EMS) ISO 14001, primarily in halls of residence.
- Developing procedures with relevant hall staff to promote reuse and recycling and imbed these as part of normal working practices.
- Recruiting, organising training for and supporting student volunteers and paid ‘interns’ to help deliver projects identified within this job description on behalf of the Sustainability department.
- Developing and implementing ‘Skills for Sustainability’ a structured programme for students including learning, training and action. This will include a range of activities from events enhancing students’ understanding of sustainability challenges, running sessions on auditing and business planning and supporting students to take action.
- Assisting in the development and delivery of wider student engagement activities, particularly by liaising with and supporting the Bristol Hub student Environment coordinator, the Futures Forum committee and societies such as BUST.
- Ensuring that infrastructure (posters, rotas, recycling bins) are stock checked and restocked where relevant for the beginning of term and throughout the year.
- Managing a project to rebrand all waste and recycling facilities in line with relevant guidance from bodies such as WRAP and liaising with external stakehrolders such as Bristol Council to ensure they are fit for purpose and managed propely.

Across all areas of work you are responsible for:
- Working with the Bristol Hub Manager, the Student Hubs Network and relevant members of the Sustainability department to ensure your areas of work are having a positive impact by assisting with data collection and management, inputting into target reviews to ensure programme delivery is as successful as possible.
- Managing the day to day budget, monitoring spend and ensuring value for money whilst developing a model through fundraising or other methods for sustaining continuous improvements in this area.
- Liaising with a range of stakeholders to help deliver the projects identified. Stakeholders will include hall staff of differing levels, Bristol SU staff and elected officers, student groups, professional services teams and relevant external contractors and service providers.
- Raising the profile of Bristol Hub and the Sustainability department among relevant stakeholders

2. Student Hubs Team
a. Attend weekly team meetings (online) and monthly team days (Oxford)
b. To deal with all matters sensitively and discretely at all times abiding by relevant confidentiality and data protection policies.

3. Sustainability Team
a. Attend monthly team meetings
