Emerging Leaders Programme - 2020

Date 21 January 2020 09:00 - 2 June 2020 16:30
Venue Birmingham

Are you a sustainability professional with responsibilities to lead on organisation-wide behaviour change, with a keen interest in
developing your career?

By attending the Emerging Leaders Programme, you will develop personal management capabilities and will be able to deliver aims and objectives in line with organisational strategy.

Through the programme, you will gain a greater understanding of leadership practices with relevance to sustainability.  Examples will be drawn from Education, not-for-profit and commercial sectors with ‘expert witnesses’ supplementing the teaching. You will receive guidance and support on expanding your networks, both internally and externally, to deliver projects with impact. Learning from others is an essential part of the programme and sharing knowledge and ideas from the cohort is actively encouraged.  There is five full training days plus five on-line 2-hour Action Learning sessions.  Full support, facilitation, and tools are provided for the Action Learning Sets along with a bespoke virtual learning environment.

Who should attend?

The EAUC Emerging Leaders Programme is for any sustainability professionals with mandates to lead on organisation-wide behaviour change. Often they have little or no ‘formal line management’ authority and may well work at levels in the hierarchy where the ability to influence those at more senior levels is an important requirement. It might be particularly attractive to sustainability professionals with an interest in developing their careers.

Whilst the programme has been developed by the Further and Higher Education sector, the skills delegates gain from attending it are transferable; therefore, we welcome delegates from the wider public sector and corporates.

The programme will be delivered over a six-month period with five face-to-face content sessions and five virtual Action Learning Set sessions, which will be set by agreement with the group.

2019 Emerging Leaders Programme attendees reflected on their expeirence:

Tim Allen - Sustainability Coordinator at The University of Sheffield said:
“Having a group of people alongside me trying the same things was reassuring that they faced the same issues. The action learning sets are a wonderful idea – it is amazing how simple coaching questions, asked by your peers, can help you unlock a new perspective and new confidence from inside yourself. I have also really enjoyed having a mentor allocated through the programme - it's good to humanise more senior colleagues that I now look up to, and to recognise that they've been on a similar journey, and that their journey continues.”

Špela Raposa - Environment Resources Manager at University of Strathclyde said:
“Overall, the Emerging Leaders Programme helped strengthen my project planning, influencing and management skills, but also the ability to evaluate personal strengths and weaknesses. I think it’s a great tool for personal development and goals, especially for those who are just starting out on their sustainability leadership journey”

Without their managers support, the Emerging Leaders Programme attendees would not have been able to gain this important set of skills.

In support of this, Jo–Anne Shields, Sustainability Manager at Loughborough University added:
"My colleagues benefited greatly from attending this programme that has improved their confidence and helped them to develop practical leadership skills. I have noticed a significant change in their approach to managing workload and projects and a real shift in attitude and engagement with others."
