The Emerging Leaders Programme is built around 3 core questions:

1. What personal skills, knowledge and behaviours do I need to develop in order to maximise my impact as a change advocate for sustainability?
2. How can I influence and support sustainable sustainability change within my organisation; exploring the nature of  the organisation’s processes, structures and dynamics?
3. What are the next global challenges for the sustainability movement; how to maximise horizon scanning, using this for organisational and personal growth?

The programme explores concepts and practices of leadership, often a challenge when formal ‘line management’ responsibility is absent. We consider how other sectors have tackled these areas; these include education, not-for-profit and commercial sectors. We invite ‘expert witnesses’ from these sectors to share their perspectives.
The programme is facilitated by a team that includes experienced Directors of Sustainability, Directors of Estates and Organisational/Leadership Development specialists. There is a core team of three facilitators for every session, and other experts join the team at relevant sessions.

Who should attend?

The EAUC Emerging Leaders Programme is for sustainability professionals who are leading organisation-wide behaviour change and sustainability projects.

The programme is open to delegates from all sectors of the economy – the principles are universally applicable and the skills transferable.

Duration

The programme will be delivered over a six-month period with five face-to-face content sessions and five virtual action learning set sessions, which will be set by agreement with the group.

9am to 4.30pm – Birmingham

21st January 2020
4th February 2020
17th March 2020
14th April 2020
2nd June 2020

Learning methods

The face to face sessions will be facilitated  by the programme directors. Time is made available for individual and group reflection and discussion. Sharing perspectives is a key aspect of the programme. We use various ‘diagnostics’ and apply models to help increase understanding of personal and organisational dynamics.
We have a bespoke virtual learning environment and encourage delegates to participate in the programme blog in- between sessions. All session content is available in the VLE as a resource for future reference and alumni of the programme have ongoing access rights.

The action learning sets take place using robust on-line conferencing software which is provided as part of the programme. Action learning is a confidential, practical group-based activity where individuals can raise their ‘hot topics’ and be supported to deal with them.  The topics discussed are often applicable to others in the group and this is an opportunity to ‘share, inspire and be inspired’.

Each delegate is provided with a mentor, one of the EAUC Fellows who has been briefed in mentoring. Mentoring continues after the end of the programme as one form of support for projects that have been identified.  Projects have been identified by each delegate as being significant for their organisation and to which they can apply the concepts and tools explored during the programme.

The programme does not carry academic credit at this stage; however much of the content maps with curricula set by validating bodies and may well be useful for accreditation of prior learning at a future date.

Testimonials
2019 Emerging Leaders Programme attendees reflected on their experience:

Tim Allen - Sustainability Coordinator at The University of Sheffield said:
“Having a group of people alongside me trying the same things was reassuring that they faced the same issues. The action learning sets are a wonderful idea – it is amazing how simple coaching questions, asked by your peers, can help you unlock a new perspective and new confidence from inside yourself. I have also really enjoyed having a mentor allocated through the programme - it's good to humanise more senior colleagues that I now look up to, and to recognise that they've been on a similar journey, and that their journey continues.”

Špela Raposa - Environment Resources Manager at University of Strathclyde said:
“Overall, the Emerging Leaders Programme helped strengthen my project planning, influencing and management skills, but also the ability to evaluate personal strengths and weaknesses. I think it’s a great tool for personal development and goals, especially for those who are just starting out on their sustainability leadership journey”

Without their managers support, the Emerging Leaders Programme attendees would not have been able to gain this important set of skills.

In support of this, Jo–Anne Shields, Sustainability Manager at Loughborough University added:
"My colleagues benefited greatly from attending this programme that has improved their confidence and helped them to develop practical leadership skills. I have noticed a significant change in their approach to managing workload and projects and a real shift in attitude and engagement with others."
