We are looking for a Head of Sustainability to be responsible to the Director of Social Responsibility and Sustainability for the University’s environmental sustainability and climate commitments as well as connections to wider Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Opportunity:
This key role will be responsible for the overall coherence, coordination, management, measurement and reporting of the University’s performance, policy and strategy.  Deliver, develop and create innovative and impactful programmes for staff and student engagement, for operational changes and for links to research, learning and teaching. To build and manage a Sustainability Unit with approximately 14 staff reporting to the Director of Social Responsibility and Sustainability. Ensure effective and proportionate measurement and reporting systems for sustainability and drive innovation and enable Edinburgh to continue to be a leader.

Your skills and attributes for success:
  • Degree or post-graduate degree in an appropriate discipline such as sustainable development, environment and sustainability, climate change or equivalent industry/work experience
  • At least 7 years direct experience of managing individuals in a team including management of resource allocation, setting team objectives and determine priorities within resource constraints 
  • Significant experience of working on environmental, sustainability or social responsibility agendas, ideally within a public sector context
  • Proven leadership skills, with an ability to progress a complex agenda of change across a large organisation
  • Exceptional understanding of sustainability and social responsibility concepts and their applicability to a university environment
