Environmental Sustainability Officer - UKRI - Medical Research Council (MRC)

UKRI published an Environmental Sustainability policy in 2020 which included an aim to be carbon neutral by 2040.  Given that much scientific research is energy intensive this is a challenging goal.  As a constituent body within UKRI MRC has adopted an Action Plan for the next five years in order to make the first significant steps and progress towards the goal of carbon neutrality.  The MRC Environmental Sustainability Officer’s role will be to work the scientific community including MRC employed and MRC funded scientists, building and property professionals, and other interested parties in order to make MRC research and its built estate work and operate in a more environmentally sustainable way. 

The intention is that the person will enable real changes to be made and will be managing the various strands that were agreed in the current plan and coordinate with the colleagues in the UKRI Central team and other Councils.

Responsibilities:
  • Implementation of the MRC Environmental Sustainability Action plan by managing the projects.
  • Working with the MRC scientific and technical community in order to achieve sustainability goals without detriment to scientific output of the research.
  • Publicising and encouraging UKRI MRC sustainability initiatives among the research community.
  • Working with architects, engineers and other design professionals to ensure new build and refurbishment initiatives incorporate the latest environmentally progressive features
  • Working with MRC, UKRI Central, other Councils, BEIS and other government organisations on environmental sustainability initiatives undertaken by government organisations
  • Reporting to the MRC Director of Capital & Estates and MRC Management Board on environmental initiatives
