Environmental & Sustainability Manager

The University of Winchester has an exciting opportunity for an experienced environmental and sustainability professional to join our busy Estates and Facilities Services (EFS) team. The role holder will primarily manage the sustainability, environmental and energy systems within the university. A good, technical understanding of buildings and sustainability would be advantageous as well as a wider understanding of sustainability in all aspects of University life.

The post holder will be responsible for championing sustainability and environmental issues within the University and will play a key collaborative role supporting colleagues at all levels both in professional services and academic departments to embed sustainability across all our activities and operations. The role holder will provide expert advice, developing and implementing policies and procedures in conjunction with promoting sustainability projects across the University. You will lead on the development, implementation and ongoing effective operation of our approach to sustainability and be a ‘go to’ person for advice and guidance.

You will possess excellent interpersonal skills with strong stakeholder management ability across all levels of seniority and areas of the institution outside of EFS. The successful candidate will have significant experience of developing and implementing sustainability and environmental strategies with a track record of continuous improvement.

The University has a large and growing property portfolio in the heart of Winchester covering some 77,500 m2 of buildings over 4 sites, including 1800 student bedrooms spaces. The role holder will join the University at an exciting time as it delivers and commissions its largest construction project to date. The flagship £50m West Downs Centre will be delivered in early 2020 and will provide 7500m2 of high quality teaching, library and social learning space. The building is being built to BREEAM excellent standards and is aiming to be the first WELL accredited building in higher education.

The role holder will also implement key strategic sustainability priorities across the institution which are centred around the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 2030 Agenda. The immediate priorities will be implementing a formal Environmental Management System (EMS) (e.g. EcoCampus / ISO 14001: 2015), leading the implementation of the University’s pledge to eliminate the use of unnecessary single-use plastic by the end of December 2020, improving the University’s ranking in People and Planet’s Green League, implementing the objectives from a recent Environmental Audit, ensuring environmental legal compliance, and implementing the University’s action plan on tackling its declared Climate Emergency.

One of our core values is ‘individuals matter’. As an employee at the University of Winchester, we are committed to your wellbeing and development. You will have access to a wide range of benefits and support including complimentary access to the GetActive initiative, comprehensive staff development programme, generous holiday entitlement and pension scheme.
