Zero-Waste in Student Halls
Funded by HEFCE and managed by the London School of Economics, this innovative project aims to benefit students and the local community by diverting reusable items left in halls at the end of the academic year.A pilot study in London discovered, that every student leaves 10-12 kg of reusable items every year. This is a potential of 35 tonnes in LSE's halls of residence alone!
There are different ways of approaching the problem, e.g.
- end of term collections, donating the items to charities or / and selling back to new students
- continual collections, like clothing or book banks
- give and take / swapping / stuff exchange.
During the project LSE is working with five other universities in England to evaluate the existing reuse schemes at the institutions, establish strong local reuse networks and expand the schemes to further halls of residence. All experiences will be incorporated into regional specific Reuse Implementation Guides and will be spread during regional workshops and a national conference.
