We are all shaped by our culture. Culture is a key influence in shaping our view of the world and our sense of responsibilities within it The way in which we respond, both as individuals and collectively, to the most pressing problems that we face – climate change, poverty, inequality, biodiversity loss – is shaped in a critically important way by our culture. Collectively, we have the power to shape the culture that shapes us.

On Tuesday 30 October the EAUC (Scotland) and SDE Network will join to create an event which will use these principles in the hope to create sustainable action.

Common Cause attempts to rebalance cultural values to create a more equitable, sustainable and democratic society. By fostering an understanding of the importance of our values in shaping society's responses to pressing social and environmental issues, and creating processes and spaces where groups can openly examine the relationship between our values and our collective responses to the pressing problems that we face, whilst empowering people to influence the cultural values of the activities, be it through projects, campaigns, work places or in the lecture theatre.

In Scotland, Common Cause is being taken forward by the Scottish Common Cause Core Group.  They work closely with the UK Core Group on researching cultural values, providing workshops to share the research findings and developing practical ways to apply a values-based approach.  The Common Cause work in Scotland is currently focussed on how Common Cause can be applied to formal education and community learning and development.  There are plans to expand this in the future.
