EAUC Member, the University of Winchester, has received the city’s highest endorsement for environmental performance for a second year running.
The Carbon Smart Gold certificate, awarded by the Carbon Smart project on behalf of Winchester City Council, recognises local organisations that take an intelligent and flexible approach to reducing their carbon footprint.
The University has made carbon savings through sustainable waste management, reduced energy consumption, a robust carbon management plan and improved energy efficiency.
“We are always looking at ways to minimise our carbon footprint and are delighted this on-going work has been recognised with the renewal of our Gold certificate,” said Mat Jane, Energy and Environment Manager at the University of Winchester. “Being Carbon Smart reflects our commitment to reducing our environmental impact and providing the best service to our students, staff and the wider community.”
The University's reputation as a green institution has grown significantly over the last few years. In March it won a gold, two silver and six bronze Food for Life Catering Mark awards and in June it was named as Winchester City Council’s Carbon Smart Business of the Year. In 2012 the University won Winchester Eco Business of the Year and South Coast Eco Business of the Year.
Sustainability is at the core of the University's curriculum, with a wide range of courses on offer to teach students about global sustainability issues, including MSc Sustainable Business. Further details can be found at www.winchester.ac.uk/courses
