The University of Winchester has scooped the Client of the Year Award at the 2017 Constructing Excellence Awards in London and the South East.

The Awards recognise outstanding companies working in the built environment and projects that have delivered improvements in all-round performance through collaborative working and the desire to make a difference.

The judges said: “The University lives by strong corporate ideals and transfers these through effective leadership, consultation and collaboration. It is refreshing to see a relatively small client and team pushing the boundaries and feeling they really can make a difference. Size isn’t everything but the impact they are making is exceptional.”

The University was nominated for the award by Ridge and Partners property and construction consultants for its willingness to go ‘above and beyond’ in the way it treats its students, staff, suppliers, neighbours, wider community groups and procurement partners.

Justin Ridgment, Director of Estates and Facilities Services, said: “The Constructing Excellence Award underlines the University’s commitment to adopting sustainable methods of building and running our estate. Recycling on campus is at 70 per cent, up from 14 per cent in 2009, all campus electricity is on a green tariff and we have reduced our carbon emissions by 45 per cent compared to 2006.

“We are also project managing the design and construction of the University’s new landmark teaching and learning building at West Downs to ensure its smooth running and that it integrates with our values and aspirations.”

The University also recently won the highly-acclaimed RIBA South Award 2017 and Civic Voice Design Awards for the restoration of its Victorian chapel.
