Transport
It's often not appreciated that in terms of carbon emissions, college or university transport is the biggest single contributor, responsible for typically 60% of all emissions.
Sustainable travel is about encouraging people to make informed choices about the way they travel and being aware of the consequences of these choices - on their health, their environment and their local community. It is about helping people to reduce their car dependency and encourage the use of sustainable modes of transport, when and where possible. Individuals will reap the benefits of making more sustainable and informed choices about travel, as often sustainable travel will offer a cheaper and stress free alternative, as well as enabling people to build exercise into their daily life, even if it is just a 10 minute brisk walk to the bus stop.
Sustainable transport includes walking, cycling, using public transport, car sharing and using vehicles that minimise carbon emissions, such as electric, LPG, bio diesel and hybrid cars.
Roads in the UK are becoming congested and grinding to a halt at peak hours. At peak times about 80% of cars have only one person in them. Staff and students are part of this problem. The car dependency culture has grown to such a level that resultant problems which affect health, the environment and the economy are being addressed as a matter of urgency by universities and colleges throughout the UK. The problems are now highly visible and the price of congestion and loss of building land getting very costly. It is essential that the sector responds to the growing pressures and unique opportunities it has to change staff and student travel behaviour.
The EAUC has an active Transport Group. All members of staff of higher/further education institutions which are members of the EAUC are welcome to join the group. For more information please email info@eauc.org.uk
