The University of Winchester has won a gold award in the Carbon Smart environment awareness scheme run by Winchester City Council.

It was one of the first to sign up to Winchester City Council’s Carbon Smart initiative when it was launched in 2012, as an incentive for businesses to reduce their carbon emissions.

The university continues to lead the way in environmental awareness through its business practices, and various courses designed to teach students about global sustainability issues.

Mat Jane, Energy and Environment Manager at the University of Winchester commented on the Award:

“This is the third consecutive year that we have won the Carbon Smart gold accreditation. The University is very proud of its green achievements and this prestigious award is a well-earned endorsement.

We have been working hard to reduce our carbon emissions and improve environmental performance year on year. We have reduced our emissions by more than 40% per square metre of the estate since 2006; increased recycling rates to 70%; dramatically reduced our water consumption; and the University buys only 100% renewable energy.”
