Why is Sustainable Development Important?

The government has made it clear that it wants the public sector to be a leading exponent of sustainable development, by promoting and delivering sustainable development in all of its policies as well as in the running of its operations. The LSC recognises that it has a central role in implementing sustainable development through its role as a provider within the learning and skills sector. The LSC's Sustainable Development Strategy states that

the learning and skills sector will pro-actively commit and contribute to sustainable development through its management of resources, the learning opportunities it delivers and its engagement with communities.

But although the idea and vision is simple, implementing it is a challenging task. Implementing sustainable development asks practitioners to take forward four objectives at the same time:

  • social progress that recognises the needs of everyone
  • effective protection of the environment
  • prudent use of natural resources
  • the maintenance of high and stable levels of economic growth and employment
