Why recycle?
The types of waste we produce, the way we manage waste, and the
way we transport it, all impact on the environment. Our country is
not only running out of space for waste disposal, but landfill also
generates 40% of methane emissions in the UK! While waste cannot be
completely eliminated, we can reduce its environmental impact by
preventing waste from being created wherever possible, and by
responsibly disposing of the waste that is produced.
Waste minimisation and greater re-use and recycling will reduce
landfill and the associated negative impacts on the environment.
Sustainable waste management may also have wider benefits. For
example, where activities such as recycling are part of
community-based projects, this may benefit social cohesion and
reinforce positive messages on sustainable development.
Recent years have seen a broadening of the scope of waste
legislation to cover a wider range of waste management operations.
Legislation now places responsibilities on all parties involved in
the waste management chain from the producer of the waste to the
person responsible for its final disposal.
There are also financial gains to be made; investment in a good
recycling scheme will pay itself back. A rate of £18 per
tonne in 2005-06 with subsequent annual increases of at least
£3 per tonne (with a medium to long term rate of £35
per tonne) means that costs will continue to rise significantly.
These continued rises will provide a strong economic incentive for
waste producers to reduce the amount of waste that they
generate.
