New Further Education BREEAM Template to be Introduced

Posted on 7 May 2008

The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) are working with the Building Research Establishment (BRE) to produce a new Further Education BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) Scheme. The scheme will become available from 1st August 2008, but the guidance will be made publicly available from 6th June this year.

Every 2 years BREEAM is updated, and this year sees the introduction of a new scheme for Further Education. To support this, the LSC is requiring new builds to be at least a “Very Good” standard.

BRE are looking to use this year’s update to ensure the focus of BREEAM remains on recognising, and driving improvement of the sustainability of new buildings.

Other changes that are being made in the 2008 BREEAM update include:

  • A new BREEAM rating level, ‘Outstanding,’ will be introduced. This new rating level is being added to recognise exemplar sustainable buildings.
  • Post-Construction Review will become a formal part of the certification process and full BREEAM Certification will only apply to buildings that have a completed Post Construction Review/Assessment.
  • The environmental section weightings will be updated to bring them into line with the weightings that underpin the Code for Sustainable Homes and the new Green Guide to be published later this year
  • ‘Innovation credits’ will be introduced for implementing innovative technologies and products that have a tangible environmental benefit.
  • A New BREEAM “In Use” scheme; a new, stand alone, version of BREEAM for all non-domestic existing buildings. This will replace the Management and Operation requirements.
