Municipal Waste
Municipal waste, which is waste from households and other waste collected by local authorities, makes up about a sixth of the total waste arisings in the UK, and industry and commerce accounted for just over a third¹.
The UK Government has set targets for household recycling of 25 / 30 / 33 % of household waste to be recycled or composted by 2005 / 2010 / 2015. The 2005 target was achieved, and latest statistics show that household recycling and composting reached 26.7% by 2005/6. There was a decrease in the amount of municipal waste sent to landfill by 1.9 million tonnes to 17.9 million tonnes and a 3 per cent decrease in total municipal waste collected in 2005/6, reducing from 29.6m tonnes to 28.7m tonnes.
