Memento

Memento was conceived as a community arts based activity that focused on individuals’ keepsakes, souvenirs or mementos as the starting point to explore and produce original artwork. The completed work is to be exhibited alongside the original inspirational object to create a context for debate and cultural exchange.

The partners for the Grundtvig Learning Partnership had their first project meeting on the last weekend in November. Their hosts in the ancient Catalonian town of Gerona were the artists’ organisation TACA. Greenwich Community College has the coordinating role in the project and was represented by Matthew Kolakowski from the Creative & Digital Arts area. The other European partners are: OVSG in Belgium, The Estonian Academy of Arts, Esperino Lyceum Prevezas in Greece and The University of the Third Age in Warsaw Poland.

Each participating country is taking a different approach with their community groups in the way that they are involve and what sort of artwork is produced. The project is expected to run until August 2008 and along the way will work with diverse community groups in its efforts to involve disenfranchised learners in adult learning through art practice.

The first exhibition in England is scheduled for the Steven Lawrence Gallery in October 2007
