LSC Review of Strategy for Sustainable Development

The Strategy, From Here to Sustainability, was published following consultation in 2005 and set out a vision for sustainable development in the learning and skills sector over the next ten years.

The review was designed to reflect on the LSC’s journey with sustainable development and, in particular, to highlight successes and learning in advance of the transition to the bodies that will succeed it from April 2010. ESD Consulting Ltd reviewed all the material produced by the LSC on sustainable development going back as far as 2002. To add to the insight gained from this, they also interviewed 20 people from inside and outside the LSC. Some had been involved in the LSC journey since 2005, some in similar journeys elsewhere and some were stakeholders without a direct involvement.

The themes were translated by ESD Consulting into eight recommendations for taking sustainable development forward within an organisation. To help bring them to life, ESD added examples of how implementation would look in practice. The recommendations are:
• Link sustainable development with your core mission
• Show leadership
• Be a catalyst for change
• Communicate your approach
• Build capacity
• Be target driven
• Actively engage with your stakeholders
• Focus on the curriculum

Reflecting on the outcomes of the review, Caroline Neville, sustainable development champion on LSC Management Group said “Of all the lessons learned, the most important is that, on sustainability, as in so many other areas, it really is true that actions speak louder than words.” The LSC hopes that the recommendations will be useful for many organisations in taking action on sustainable development, either the first steps in the journey or in reviewing progress. SORTED is highlighted as an example of the LSC’s progress in the review.
